Resolved Tech Support On This Item - John Peiffer - Portland, OR USA
The manufacturer responded quickly with an RMA for the first one that I received. The user manual is not very comprehensive so it didn't provide any insight into why the first unit did not work right out of the box. Following the simple set of instructions to connect the device with the included cables failed to produce a signal that any of my HDTV's could display. Even the OSD menu would not show up so I sent it back to the manufacturer under the assumption that it was a faulty unit.
When I received the replacement unit, I got the same results. Through online chat support, I discovered that the default output setting is VGA (a detail not clearly documented in the user manual) which explains why the YPbPr input on all of my HDTV sets using the supplied blue, green, and red component RCA cable failed to display the input signal OR the OSD menu. In order to change the output setting from VGA to YPbPr, you have to navigate the OSD menu -- a bit of a Catch-22 given that nothing would display on the HDTV at all. Using a PC monitor with VGA cables in order to change the output settings also failed because the entire display would flash at about 0.5 Hz and interfere with the OSD menu selections as I attempted to drill down to the menu choices where I could change the setting -- it kept bouncing me back to the previous menu level without allowing me to change the output setting. Repeated resets and power cycles failed to resolve the issue. The Tech Support rep was working off-site and did not have access to one of the units but he said that he would email me a document with better instructions on how to make the setting changes. It has been two weeks and I suspect that he forgot to follow up...
I will try this with different PC monitors and another round with technical support before giving up. I think that an improved user manual would have saved the manufacturer and myself the unncecessary time and expense of the first RMA shipment. Hopefully, it won't be necessary to return the item for a full refund. At this point I can't give it a positive or negative rating since I don't have a functioning unit to evaluate, but I will follow up with my results as soon as I have them.
Feb 25th 2010 - update from the manufacturer. A support technician shed some light on the issue I was experiencing:
This converter will only work properly if you are using it from a desktop (VGA) source.
This is a known synchronization issue with this model and using a laptop as the VGA source.
There is also an undisclosed incompatibility with the Philips 42pf7320a HDTV I am using.
Due to the undocumented incompatibility information, I went through some delays which could have been avoided and so could have the costs incurred by the manufacturer who went to a lot of trouble to help me with this.
Don't buy this unit unless you have a desktop PC that you are attempting to connect to an HDTV -- but the latter device you are using may be an incompatible model which you would need to confirm with the manufacturer before making your purchase because the documentation and all-too-brief sales description makes no mention of this.
I was unable to evaluate this unit for a meaningful rating since I was never able to get it to work, but it might be just the right thing for your purpose if you are using a desktop PC. I will be returning this item and upgrading my purchase to the VGA2HDMIPro which should not have the synchronization issue.
Good luck.
